Nick Cannon is preparing to release his first studio album in 11 years. The title of said album, “White People Party Music,” has sparked some controversy, but not nearly as much as as his new promotional gimmick and recent tweets.
Cannon, most recently noted for his marriage to R&B/pop singer Mariah Carey, posted a picture of himself on Instagram done up in “whiteface,” dressed in stereotypical “caucasian” clothing, and with a caption which read “It’s official… I’m White!!!” This was then followed by the hashtags “#WHITEPEOPLEPARTYMUSIC… #GoodCredit #DogKissing #BeerPong #FarmersMarkets #FistPumping #CreamCheeseEating #RacialDraft ‘Bro I got drafted!!’”
The artist’s promotional stunt has set off some rather heated responses in the Twitterverse. One user posted “This is so f–king offensive. What if Britney spears made herself black and put a pic up that says ‘it’s official.. I’M BLACK.’” Others have chimed in stating that Cannon is perpetrating a racial double standard.
Cannon has also taken to his Twitter feed, in part to defend himself while, at the same time, feeding the flames. He recently tweeted, “Damn I didn’t know it was going to be this hard being White! … I’m exhausted with all this ‘privilege’ LOL #WhitePeopleProblems.”
“White People Party Music” is due out April 1st.
So what’s your take? Is this an innocent gimmick in order to promote his new album or has Cannon gone too far? Tell us what you think in the comments below.
