Happy Monday, my friends! The news is full of depressing stuff right now (always), from escalating turmoil in the Middle East to rioting in Buenos Aires following Argentina’s loss in the World Cup. so I thought we’d skip all that and kick your week off with a few laughs.

We all love memes. I mean, what better way to get your point across on the internet than by posting a picture you didn’t take with a sarcastic comment you didn’t write? Still, they’re always good for a laugh, so I thought we’d take a look at a few rap music fact-check memes by Emmanuel Hudson. This is what you get when you actually pay attention to the lyrics in your favorite songs. They’re funny ’cause they’re true. 🙂

Partners In Rhyme: Jay Z and Kanye kickstart Samsung’s concert series at SXSW

The dynamic duo of Kanye West and Jay Z gave a Texas-sized performance last night/early this morning, helping to kick off the music portion of this year’s SXSW conference in Austin. The concert was the first in Samsung‘s series of performances and filled the 4,600-seat Austin Music Hall.

According to the AP’s Chris Talbott, fans were lined up hundreds of yards around the block waiting to get in. Of the ones lucky enough to gain entry, many were admitted free of charge! How? Simply by showing their Samsung device complete with Samsung’s new Milk Music streaming service. Nice!

The hugely successful show also succeeded in stealing some of Apple‘s thunder as it was scheduled at the same time as the iTunes Festival hip-hop night (taking place just down the road at the ACL Moody Theater) featuring Kendrick Lamar and ScHoolboy Q.

Some speculate that it was a purposeful dig given the fact that Kanye had recently voiced some scathing remarks directed toward Apple CEO Tim Cook. During a concert in New Jersey, Kanye took a moment to state, “Stop trying to get performers to play your festival for free! You are rich as (expletive).” Coincidence? Not likely. 🙂

Elton And Kanye, Bonnaroo Buddies!

tumblr_mnrzb9VI3Y1s93eiho1_1280

Ok, well maybe they’re not “buddies,” per se, but this morning Reuters announced that music industry titans Elton John and Kanye West will both be performing at this year’s Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival in Manchester, Tennessee. They will be joining the likes of Lionel Richie, Arctic Monkeys, Jack White, and Ice Cube along with many other artists and bands scheduled to play at the 4-day party-fest.

The “Piano Man” has taken top-billing for this year’s Bonnaroo festival, but the question on everybody’s mind has got to be not “if,” but “how” will Kanye attempt to steal the spotlight. Let’s face it, he isn’t exactly known for his laid-back attitude or humility. In 2008 Kanye performed at Bonnaroo, but began his set 8 hours late. The following year he infamously interrupted Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech at the MTV Video Music Awards by grabbing a mic and practically worshiping BeyoncĂ© on national TV. Let’s hope this year’s Bonnaroo performance is a step in the right direction for the controversial artist.

Sir Elton, on the other hand, is thought of by many as the epitome of class. In a career that has spanned 5 decades he has sold more than 300 million records and recorded over fifty top-40 hits, making him one of the best-selling artists of all time. His honors don’t stop there, however, as in 1998 Elton John became “Sir” Elton John, knighted by Queen Elizabeth II for his multiple charitable contributions, including the establishment of the Elton John AIDS Foundation in 1992.

Bonnaroo takes place June 12-15 in Manchester, TN, about 65 miles southeast of Nashville. Approximately 80,000 people (“Roonies”) are expected to attend.

There’s no doubt that it’s going to be a hell of a party, but why wait? You can hold your own “Kararoo” with Karaoke Cloud and Sing-N-Share! Check us out today.

2014 People’s Choice Awards: And the winners are…

peoples-choice-awards-2014-sobre-pop-2013-capa

January 8th marked the 40th anniversary of the People’s Choice Awards and what a night it was! Many forms of media and entertainment are honored on this night, but we, of course, want to draw special attention to the music industry aspect. Lots of categories and lots of winners so let’s get started!

One of the biggest winners of the night was Mr. Justin Timberlake. The triple-threat earned three wins in three separate categories — Favorite Album (The 20/20 Experience), Favorite R&B Artist, and Favorite Male Artist.

Katy Perry also earned a lion’s share of awards, doubling up with wins for Favorite Music Video (Roar) and Favorite Song (Roar).

Successful comebacks are few and far between, but don’t tell that to the members of Fall Out Boy. Reuniting in 2013 after an extended “hiatus,” the 2000’s punk-pop icons released a new album (Save Rock and Roll) and earned the 2014 People’s Choice Award for Favorite Alternative Band.

Since their formation in 2010, One Direction has been headed in only… well, one direction; up! Continuing their gangbusters-like journey, the British boy band kicked off 2014 with a win in the Favorite Band category, beating out the likes of Maroon 5 and Paramore.

Social media is heralding the resurgence of the independent artist and, in my opinion, it’s a beautiful thing. One duo of said independents is Macklemore & Ryan Lewis. They’ve been blowing up the charts and now they start the new year with a huge win, garnering the award for Favorite Hip-Hop Artist in a category that included industry giants Jay Z, Kanye West, Drake, and Lil Wayne.

There’s almost nothing more to say about Taylor Swift that hasn’t already been said in a blog, news story, or the diary of every 13 year-old girl who dreams of being a singer/song-wirter. I mean, did anyone doubt that she would win this year’s award for Favorite Country Artist? If you did I would strongly advise against taking any trips to Vegas anytime soon.

Ever feel like you’ve accidentally stepped into a time machine? I don’t remember driving off in a DeLorean this morning, but it sure feels like the early 2000’s with artists like Justin Timberlake and Fall Out Boy taking home the honors at this year’s PCA’s. Now, adding to the deja vu, we present the winner of this year’s Favorite Pop Artist award, Britney Spears! After break-downs and some much needed time off she has definitely worked her way back to the top of the pop world.

You know you’re off to a great new year when you edge out artists like Pink, Katy Perry, and Britney Spears. That’s exactly what Demi Lovato did to win this year’s award for Favorite Female Artist.

Congratulations to all of this year’s winners!

Bruno Mars, Pirate King?

Wireless Festival 2011 - Day 1

Okay… maybe not exactly. Well, at least not in the way you’re probably thinking. Our inside sources have recently confirmed that the Grammy Award winner does not, in fact, wear an eye patch, have a peg-leg, or tote around a beloved parrot. Nor, to our knowledge, does he engage in any pillaging-like activities. According to the data analysis firm Musicmetric, however, Mars was the most pirated artist of 2013 with his songs garnering nearly 5.8 million illegal downloads!

This astonishing number places Bruno at the top of the list, edging out Rihanna, who’s music was hit 5.4 million times in 2013. Rounding out the top five are Daft Punk (4.2 million), Justin Timberlake (3.9 million), and Flo Rida (3.5 million). Honorable mentions, so to speak, are Kanye West, Eminem, Jay Z, Drake and Pitbull, all of whom also earned high illegal download numbers.

On an interesting side-note, Musicmetric also previously reported that BeyoncĂ©’s newest self-titled album was illegally downloaded nearly 240,000 times in it’s first week alone! Almost a quarter of a million pirated hits in a week?! That’s a lot of booty… even for BeyoncĂ©!

Forget About Dre? No way, says karaoke ace!

In a market saturated by modern-day hip hop and performers like Jay-Z, Lil Wayne, and Kanye West, it can be all too easy to forget about the innovators who are largely responsible for the success of today’s artists.

Grammy winner Dr. Dre is one such innovator. Best known for his triple-platinum album “The Chronic,” (considered by many to be one of the greatest rap/Hip-Hop albums ever produced ) Dre was also instrumental in the careers of several other iconic artists, including Snoop Dogg and Eminem.

At least one fan refuses to forget this fact. Ladies and gentlemen, meet Mr. Vincent Marcus! This fresh young talent pays homage to both the legendary Dr. Dre and arguably his most famous progeny Eminem with this spot-on karaoke rendition of the appropriately-titled 2001 hit “Forgot About Dre.” (NSFW)

With his smooth transitions and impressive flow style, this young man could easily have a career in the music industry. Dre, if you’re out there, Mr. Marcus may be just what the “Dr.” ordered.
