Diamond Rings & Old Barstools: A Family Affair

bar stool - croppedTim McGraw recently came out with his fourth consecutive single, titled “Diamond Rings & Old Barstools”. The song features a duet with small town singer/songwriter Catherine Dunn. Many believe that this is the best releases in a number of years, enjoying the creative, modern new hit. McGraw and Dunn’s voices harmonize and play extremely well off of one another– which could be because they are actually cousins!

The song is simple in structure, letting Dunn’s voice ring out crystal-clear. Using diamond rings and old barstools as metaphors for the opposing lifestyles of traveling musicians (or just drunks) and married life, it mourns a relationship the narrator knew would never last, but was willing so hard for it to.

When listening to country music, I always enjoy a creative duet. I believe that the opposing sounds bring out the beauty in them, and think that this song does a great job in doing so.The song is already rising in the charts, and it could eventually be a top hit!

Sparks Ignite as Gomez and Zedd collaborate on “I Want You To Know”

Recently, Russian-German electronic music DJ and producer Anton Zaslavski, professionally known as Zedd, collaborated with his current girlfriend Selena Gomez to produce “I Want You To Know,” an ultimate hit. This is Zedd’s first single to be released since his debut album “Clarity,” which was released in 2012.

I Want You to Know” combines the melodic part of his smash hit “Clarity“, using the strength of his latest global hit “Break Free” along Ariana Grande. The result entailed feel-good vibes, jubilant energy, and Gomez’s bubbly vocals. The track landed in the top 20 pop songs mere weeks after it was released, and the music video only made it more popular.

During an interview with New Zealand’s radio show The Edge Afternoons, the 22-year-old singer confirmed that she did date the DJ, 25, earlier this year. They never publicly declared the status of their relationship, but Gomez said, “they definitely had a thing.”

The relationship has since fizzled out, but the pair still seems to be on good terms. Nevertheless, they created an upbeat, club-infused track, which has gotten massive amount of publicity since the release.

Will ‘Move On’ help Dunn move up?

Clare Dunn released her first major-label single ‘Move On’ last week, and is hoping that her influence on the completion of the song will make it a hit. Dunn calls the song a page out of her life. “Move On was just something I was going through. I was friends with his guy. I’m very shy when it comes to guys, a lot of the time. The way you’ll know if I really like someone is if I get shy. I was struggling with that, and he was kind of shy, too.” The video premiered at USA TODAY, and Dunn wowed fans and listeners alike with her music that has been governed by her Colorado roots.

These lines in the chorus summed up the song best:

You’re on the sidelines wasting time when you could be winning with me
All them days are over, all them red lights are green
So move on, move on, move on
Make your move on me

In its first week out, Move On was the second most-added song at country radio, barely behind the new one from Miranda Lambert, Smokin’ and Drinkin’. “It’s already looking like a hit on The Highway,” says SiriusXM’s director of country programming, John Marks. “Hopefully, terrestrial radio will give this song and artist a chance. If so, more country music fans will be able to see for themselves why she deserves a prominent place in country music.”

Dunn stands out as a new artist, as she has been involved in every aspect of her new single’s debut. She has dreamed of becoming a singer since a young age, and got the chance to hit the big stage while singing backup in Luke Bryan’s 2011 hit Country Girl.

Taylor Swift Sounds Off: “Music Is Art, and Art Should Be Paid For.”

It’s not exactly rare for famous people to let their opinions be known. From full-blown interviews to short quips on their Facebook or Twitter accounts, Hollywood and music industry superstars don’t typically hide their feelings on politics or anything else they feel passionate about. It is, however, rare for one of the pop-culture elite to actually write an entire op-ed for a nationwide newspaper.

Well, that’s exactly what Taylor Swift has done. The beautiful and talented singer/songwriter has written an op-ed for the Wall Street Journal in which she gives her optimistic two cents about the future of the music industry.

“In recent years, you’ve probably read the articles about major recording artists who have decided to practically give their music away, for this promotion or that exclusive deal,” she wrote. “My hope for the future, not just in the music industry, but in every young girl I meet…is that they all realize their worth and ask for it.”

While many artists are scathing in their remarks when it comes to revealing their personal opinions about their own industries, Swift remains typically upbeat, refusing to tarnish her famously sunny disposition. “Music is art, and art is important and rare,” she wrote. “Important, rare things are valuable. Valuable things should be paid for. It’s my opinion that music should not be free, and my prediction is that individual artists and their labels will someday decide what an album’s price point is. I hope they don’t underestimate themselves or undervalue their art.”

While celebrity has always been a popularity contest (that’s kinda how you get to become a celebrity in the first place), Taylor took some time to address the rising trend of social media-based popularity within the entertainment industry. “A friend of mine, who is an actress, told me that when the casting for her recent movie came down to two actresses, the casting director chose the actress with more Twitter followers,” she said. “I see this becoming a trend in the music industry.”

This is more than just a valid point. In a society where people can now become famous for simply being famous, sheer talent and ability are no longer enough to either grant or prolong success. Social media has changed everything and it appears that there is no going back.

Jay Z and Beyonce: Masters of the (Music) Universe!

Billboard has just released it’s Power 100 list revealing the most powerful individuals currently in the music industry, and, to many, it’s no surprize who’s topping that list. Since their marriage in 2008, Jay Z and Beyoncé have been one of the hottest power couples in the entertainment world, but their meteoric rise to the top has secured the pair a spot normally occupied by label executives and CEOs.

Beyoncé and Jay Z are the only performing artists found on the entire list, to say nothing of the top 10. According to Billboard columnist Andrew Hampp, the reason the dynamic duo trumped the competition is that by “Leveraging their star power to release new albums in unprecedented ways—Jay Z through Samsung and Beyoncé through iTunes—they instantly changed how the industry and fans thought about interacting with music.”

There is no doubt that the music industry in general has been changing drastically over the last decade. From the way consumers purchase their music to the innovative ways in which artists and producers are releasing new tracks and albums, the old marketing model is fading away. Artists like Jay Z and Beyoncé are at the forefront of that change and, in my opinion, their spot at the top of the Billboard Power 100 list is well deserved.
